Summer 2018 Service Learning Trip to Guatemala FAQs

Summer 2018 Service Learning Trip to Guatemala FAQs

When is the trip?

The trip will leave from the Charlotte airport June 1 and return June 9, 2018.

How much does the trip cost?

It is a total of $1750. This includes airfare, lodging and meals on NPH campus, excursion to Antigua, transportation within Guatemala, sponsoring a child, and bottled water.

What is the deadline to sign up?

The first deposit ($400) is due by February 15, which secures your spot on the trip. The remaining balance ($1350) is due by April 13. This deposit is non-refundable unless the trip is cancelled by NPH USA.

How do I make the deposit?

Go to the NPH USA website: https://www.nphusa.org/payment/ You should choose “Yes” for “Are you going on a trip led by NPH USA?” and be sure to choose that we are going to Guatemala June 1-9. You can either pay just the deposit or the entire cost of the trip.

Where exactly are we going?

We will be going to Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos Guatemala in Parramos, Guatemala, about 1 hour from Guatemala City. You can find out more about NPH by visiting NPH.org or speaking with Ms. Gillis.

What is the purpose of the trip?

This is a service learning trip, meant to allow students (or families) to participate in a transformative experience with a daily service project helping the home, reflections to help us better understand ourselves and others, and opportunities to make cross cultural friendships!

I’ve already paid the deposit. What else do I need to do?

  1. Make sure you have (or have applied for) a valid passport. To be considered valid, it should still be good through at least 6 months after our arrival date (so through at least December 1, 2018).
  2. Start working on the paperwork, found on https://www.nphusa.org/payment/ Choose the adult or minor packet as appropriate as of June 1, 2018. This paperwork is all due with your remaining balance by April 13.

Who is leading the trip?

Ms. Gillis and Mr. Nunn of TBCS are leading the trip, with Ms. Gillis acting as the volunteer representative of NPH USA while on the trip. There will also be NPH Guatemala staff supporting us while in Guatemala and NPH USA staff assisting with paperwork and payments.

I still have more questions. How can I get more info?

  • Visit NPH.org for more info on NPH or look it up on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media for your first introduction to the homes and children.
