Service Learning Opportunity in Mexico - June 2018

Service Learning Opportunity in Mexico - June 2018

Do you want to go somewhere awesome and participate in a transformative service learning opportunity? In early June, Ms. Gillis and Mr. Nunn are leading a trip to the orphanage Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos in Mexico, where Ms. Gillis volunteered for 18 months before working at TBCS. We will spend each morning working on a service project to benefit the children, for which students will earn community service hours. In the afternoons and evenings, students will hang out with the children and teens of NPH, making cross cultural friendships, playing sports, dancing to popular music, and doing whatever other activities are planned for the 500+ children of NPH that day. We will also have reflection activities and discussions to help our students grow throughout their week in Mexico, returning to the US with a new understanding of the world and themselves. We will also have an excursion to nearby Cuernavaca, a beautiful colonial town, to allow students to get to know Mexico outside of the orphanage too.
Included in the trip is becoming a godparent to a child of NPH. Students will exchange letters with their godchildren before arriving, so by the time they arrive there are already children very excited to meet them!  We will sleep, eat, rest, reflect, and play all on the orphanage property for a total of up to $1700. This trip is open to high school students, no matter their language of study at TBCS. Exceptions for 8th graders may be considered on a case by case basis with demonstrations of exceptional maturity.
