Josiane Vero

My goal is to make my students read Latin stories as if they were English novels–an ambitious goal for a “dead” language, one could say! Our Latin stories are varied, fun, and they contain real characters: lazy slaves, powerful masters, drunk cooks, love affairs, etc. My students react to these characters and enjoy acting out the stories in English in the classroom. More importantly, they recognize details in the socio-historical setting (the Roman Empire), while learning about the social, political, and historical aspects of Roman culture. Our web book has a wonderful cultural section in each chapter that allows us to take virtual tours, watch short movies, and learn about Roman civilization. Students compare and contrast Roman culture to their own culture, to my culture (European), and to the rest of the world. We learn to be open minded and tolerant.

What do you like about teaching at TBCS?

I've taught at TBCS since 2000, and—each day—I've been able to enter a friendly environment where work is about sharing knowledge with enthusiasm. The students are the reason why I like to teach at TBCS. They are inspiring, they are not afraid to go above and beyond, and they are proud of and care about their school.
